I stayed for two nights with family. The location is quite nice - just beside Holiday Plaza, a quite old shopping complex which is renowned for pirated DVDs. It seems to be popular with Singaporeans. The hotel lobby feels welcoming. The size of the room is slightly above average - the superior rooms come with double queen beds. However, the room feels dated. Nevertheless, they're in the process of renovating the rooms and coffee house, and should be ready by June. Internet in the room is charged RM10 per hour. The breakfast spread may not be the largest, but they do taste good. Japanese food is also available. Cannot say much about other facilities because didn't use them. Staff service was OK. When the bill came (at RM 240 per night for superior room), I felt it quite expensive as I know I can get better value for money elsewhere. However, if they charge the same rate for newly renovated rooms come June, then I will come again.

After reading all your feedback, i guess.. i should cancel my company's annual dinner reservation with Mutiara Hotel. I stayed with Hyatt before, the services are excellent and rooms are clean. Ask the bellboy during your next visit to Hyatt, "How long have they work with Hyatt?" U will be surprise!!!.. Pay a little more for a greater different.

I had a very bad experience staying in Mutiara Hotel JB. This is my first time staying in a hotel in JB. I was recommended by a friend that Mutiara JB offers a 24-hour check in/check out service. I checked in on the 23th June 2006 at around 11.30pm. On the next day, I was confronted by the duty manager of Mutiara JB at around 8pm that I was supposed to check out at 6pm that day. Being in a movie at the new Tebrau City Cineplex, I was not able to return right away to check out. However, I did request to return and check out of my room once the movie had ended. When I returned to check out my room at about 10.30pm, I was billed an extra RM86.50++ for late checkout. It turned out Mutiara JB has changed its policy recently, and those who have checked in after 10pm WILL NOT BE ENTITLED TO A 24-HOUR CHECK IN/CHECK OUT serivce. They would have to check out by 6pm the next day.
As I was not told of the new policy by the receptionist upon my checkin, I naturally assumed the 24-hour service is still in practice. Thus, I was horribly surprised of the room penalty imposed. I talked to the male duty manager in-charge, by the name of Shamaruddin (can't really remember the spelling), who refused to listen to my explanation, as I told him that I shouldn't be penalised for something I wasn't aware of. If I had known the change of policy, I would have not went for a movie, and would check out as requested.
I put acroos my doubts about the credibility of the receptionist who insisted she told me of the new policy, and Mr Shamaruddin defended her and INSISTED she told me about the change of policy, despite the fact he wasn't present at the time I checked in.
My friend being a regular customer of Mutiara JB was very annoyed with the duty manager's attitude, as the manager had insinuated us of being dishonest and unreasonable, despite the fact that my friend was a regular customer and has never been penalised for checking out after 6pm even when he checked in after 10pm. He told the duty manager about this, but the manager refused to listen. The duty manager had surprisingly told us that in order "to be fair to the rest of the guests", we have to pay for the penalty, as MANY OTHER UNTOLD GUESTS WHO WERE NOT INFORMED LIKE US HAVE PAID THEIRS. So he did admit many unassuming guests had already paid for late checkout when the staffs had not told them about the new policy.
I will formerly make a complaint when the hotel's General Manager is around. To me, it is never a matter of paying the RM86.50++, but a question of me paying for a penalty that I wasn't briefed on previously, and being insulted as being dishonest in the process. I wasn't told about the penalty when I was called at 8pm on the 24th while I was in the movies.
If there's a change of hotel checkin/check out policy, it should be made known in black and white, and not solely be depended on the staffs to tell the guests because human errs. However Mr Shamaruddin seemed to think his staffs are infallible, and that all guests are blatant compulsive liars.
I have no respect for a duty manager who doesn't listen to the guests' side of story, and whose intention is to relentlessly argue his way around, and defend his staffs when their integrity is apparently in question.
Mutiara JB has lost not only me as a guest in the future, but my friend as its regular custom as well. For a mere RM86.50++, and the receptionist's credibility in question, Mr Shamaruddin has opted to believe in his staff fervently, and even refuse any form of investigation, and thus has helped his hotel to lose more than RM2000 worth of income per year from me and my friend. Now that's what customer service and business planning is all about.
I will not further complain about my distaste of its old furniture, and broken light bulbs in my room, or the incorrect room rates of Mutiara JB as posted in its main hotel website.
A hotel is never just about providing a place for guests to stay in. It should embody a cozy environment to stay, as well as staffs who WOULD LISTEN TO THE NEEDS OF THE GUESTS. Apparently Mutiara JB is more interested in recking in profits, instead of focusing its attention on staff training, and replacing old, broken furnitures and toilet amenities.

My 1 night stay at the Mutiara Hotel JB recently was quite satisfactory. After a whole exhausting day at a meeting, I was pleased to be greeted by a very friendly and polite receptionist upon checking in. The room itself was much more comfortable compared to the Puteri Pacific which I stayed at the last time I was in JB. But it’s not perfect though. The carpet was stained. The air-con wasn’t cold enough and I can’t turn it up or down. The safety deposit box in the room was broken and unavailable. The room isn’t sound-proof… I could hear clearly the kids next door playing and laughing whilst their dad was watching the world cup match! Mutiara should do something about the doors to adjoining rooms, lest there will be some privacy issue cropping up sometime in the future.
Those small issues aside, everything else was fine. The breakfast buffet was good. The swimming pool didn’t look so bad either, old perhaps, but still ok. I didn’t check out the other facilities although from what I heard from other guests, everything seems A-OK. The shopping complex next door, the Holiday Plaza was a bit “jinjang” for my taste but it was nonetheless convenient to have all those shops nearby.
Another thing…. they don’t require deposit at all upon checking in ….. unlike some other wannabe hotels that asks for RM100 or RM200 deposit even if you’ve already paid for your room thru Cuti. I like hotels that seem to trust guests. Since we’ve paid for the room before seeing it, it’s only fair that they reciprocate by giving us the benefit of the doubt, which in the case of Mutiara, they do. So I like this one a lot.

I've been staying in this hotel everytime I visit JB for the last 10 years. The "new wing" is good. Dollar for dollar, the best value hotel in JB. The only complaint is the swimming pool - definitely need to be upgraded.

I've stayed here a couple of times. A good, quality hotel with good service. Staff is friendly and helpful. Clean and well maintained. Rooms are spacious and the food is good. The holiday plaza is just next door and this shopping centre is a place with good bargain and value for money shopping, food, entertainment, etc. I will definitely recommend this hotel. Keep it up guys!
