Nakhon Si Thammarat City Sights
Wat Phra Mahathat
The South’s largest temple and believed to be more than 1,000
years old, Wat Phra Mahathat occupies a large compound. The
complex is dominated by a 77-metre-high Chedi, topped by
a solid gold spire. Several halls enshrine Buddha images and
other religious objects, considered of architectural interest.
Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum
Providing a good introduction to the art and culture of the
South, the museum houses an excellent collection of priceless
artefacts, as well as examples of the region’s major crafts, including
yan liphao vine-woven handbags that were traditionally
royal gifts, and nielloware.
Old City Wall
The city’s defences were rebuilt in several periods, the last time
was in the 17th century. Today a 2,230-metre length survives to
give a good insight into Nakhon Si Thammarat’s original power
and significance.
Chedi Yak
The city’s second tallest Chedi, believed to have been construct-ed in the year 1003.
