The excitement of a border province and the great escape of Thailand’s second largest island, rugged mountains and idyllic beaches can be found. Lying 315 km. from Bangkok, Trat is the furthest province along Thailand’s east coast, covering an area of 2,862 sq. km. Along the western edge, Khao Banthat mountain range forms the border with Cambodia, while off the eastern coast are more than fifty large and small islands with long white sandy beaches and unspoiled coral reefs. The rugged hinterland blends earth scarred by years of mining for rubies with lusher areas of fruit orchards. The name ‘Trat’ is believed to be a corruption of Krat, a tree used for making brooms. During the Ayutthaya period, the town was called “Ban Bang Phra”.
